When Life Gets Hectic
When Life Gets Hectic: Balancing Life’s Priorities in Retirement
No matter how carefully we plan our lives—balancing work, family, commitments, and personal time—there will be moments when it all seems to bunch up at once. You know the feeling: the deadline at work, the family event, a commitment at church, and that project you’ve been meaning to finish. When everything feels important, how do we know where to focus?
In these moments, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, to think we need to do it all. But the truth is, God doesn’t expect us to juggle everything perfectly. He’s given us a blueprint for how to handle both work and rest—and it starts by knowing that neither should become an idol.
God’s Design for Work and Rest
In Genesis, we see that God created both work and rest as vital parts of life. He worked for six days, creating the world, and then He rested. This rhythm wasn’t just for Him—it was for us, too. Work is good; it gives us purpose and a way to contribute. But rest is equally important, allowing us to recharge and reflect.
When we focus too much on work or rest, making either of them our primary concern, we lose sight of God’s intended balance. We become consumed with productivity or, on the other hand, lethargy. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we must do it all or we’ll fall behind. But in reality, when we prioritize rest, we are trusting that God is in control.
When Priorities Collide
Even with the best of intentions, there will be times when work and rest—along with family and other commitments—collide. For me, this might look like a podcast episode that needs to be recorded, but at the same time, I’ve committed to watching my grandkids. In those moments, I ask myself: What really matters here?
The answer for me is simple. The grandkids win every time. And that’s okay.
It’s not that my podcast doesn’t matter—it does, and I’ve committed to it. But my family, my relationships, and the time I spend investing in others is always going to take priority over something that can wait.
The Grace in Letting Go
There’s a lot of grace in allowing ourselves to step back from our plans and re-evaluate when things don’t go the way we expect. We don’t need to do it all, and in fact, trying to do so can lead to burnout. Instead, we need to embrace God’s grace and realize that He often works through these interruptions.
God is present in the busyness, but He is also in the moments when we stop and refocus on what matters most.
How to Prioritize When Life Bunches Up
So, how do we handle those moments when everything feels equally important? Here are a few practical tips that I’ve found helpful:
Identify Your Non-Negotiables
Make a short list of the things that will always take priority, like time with family, faith, and your health. When life gets overwhelming, go back to these non-negotiables to help you decide what can wait.Take Time for Stillness
We live in a world that values constant activity, but taking time to rest in God’s presence is essential. Whether it’s prayer, reading Scripture, or simply sitting in silence, these moments of stillness can provide clarity when life feels hectic.Let Go of the Urge to Do It All
It’s okay to let go of certain tasks, especially if they aren’t aligned with your core values. Be kind to yourself when things don’t get done—remember, God’s grace is sufficient for each day.Be Open to God’s Redirection
Often, when life feels like it’s piling up, it’s an opportunity for God to shift your focus. Be open to His nudges and willing to adjust your plans as He guides you toward what truly matters.
Finding Peace in the Priorities
At the end of the day, choosing what matters most brings a deep sense of peace. It may mean saying no to something you’d planned on or rescheduling a commitment. But trusting God with your priorities allows you to focus on what really matters: relationships, faith, and a life that honors Him.
