Forty years ago today, this man changed my life.
As a single college student when I realized I was pregnant with him, my first visit to my family doctor was to confirm what I already knew. I’m sure the elderly gentleman thought he was providing a necessary service by suggesting that I had alternatives to going forward with an unplanned pregnancy. Fortunately, he was the only person in my life to suggest that. I walked out of his office that day and never went back.
Though I hadn’t intentionally gotten pregnant, I disagree with the world’s view that my baby was unplanned. His arrival was orchestrated by God before the world was created. He knew everything about him as he was formed in the womb and grew into the thoughtful, caring man he is today. This unexpected turn of events brought me a joy and purpose I never could have imagined. He brought meaning to my life after drifting aimlessly for far too long.
As a retirement coach, I talk a lot about legacy—not the kind that we leave in a trust fund, but the kind that we leave when we encourage and inspire others to live their God-given purpose. I am blessed that my son gets that and that he is using the work that God gave him to make a difference in the world. Seeing him help children see their value in this seemingly messed-up world is such a blessing.
If you are at or near retirement and would like to discover how you can leave your legacy where God has planted you, using the gifts He has given you, let’s hop on a call and get you pointed in the right direction. This transformative conversation, for which your investment is only a few minutes, could change your life trajectory and empower you to make the most of what I call the Best Season.
Happy Birthday, Tye! Your life has been a constant source of inspiration and support for me. Thank you for helping me see Jesus through your words and actions through the years and for showing me that my legacy will carry on through you and your boys. I pray you continue to live in God’s will for at least another 40 years!
