166: Biblical Rest–What if it looks different than we thought?

We know God rested on the seventh day after creation. But what if the word rest has a different meaning than we thought? What if Jesus offers something deeper than physical rest, inviting His followers to experience satisfaction and peace by understanding and following God’s will?

Guest Gregory Hall, the author of Rethinking Rest, explores the theology of rest in an accessible and appealing manner in his book and in this conversation, where we dig into the concepts of rest, Sabbath, and Shabot and how it all fits into God’s grace.

Main Points From the Show

Documents have been unearthed in the ancient near eastern continent in the last 100 to 150 years that give us insight into Biblical times.

These documents indicate that we may have missed a core understanding of the Biblical theology of rest when we look at Scripture as a whole instead of single arguments from a few select Scriptures.

It suggests that God may have rested from the organizational works but moved on to take an active role in ruling His creation, thereby ceasing one type of work and moving on to a different kind of work.

Rest can actually be a place where we are very busy doing what God calls us to do and where our soul is at rest, even when our body isn’t.

Quotes from the Show

“When we are where we know we’re supposed to be, we look forward to tomorrow; we’re not dreading it.” Greg Hall

“People are just doing the best they can with what they understand.” Greg Hall

Verses Referenced

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NAS 1995

“Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.” 1 Corinthians 10:31-33 NAS 1995
